St. Albert Surprise

The St. Albert Surprise project is a beautiful example of how thoughtful design can transform a dated bungalow into a refined, functional, and deeply personal home. What began as a compartmentalized 1980s layout became an open, connected, and light-filled space that perfectly reflects the homeowners’ lifestyle and love of art, entertaining, and comfort.

The couple fell in love with their St. Albert location—surrounded by green space and coffee shops—but the house no longer worked for how they lived. The renovation reimagined the entire main floor, introducing modern flow and functionality while maintaining the warmth of a home meant for everyday living.

A major transformation began by expanding and opening up the kitchen—once small and disconnected—into the former formal dining area, creating a welcoming hub at the center of the home. Hidden behind the kitchen is a cleverly concealed den, a cozy retreat that doubles as a guest room or reading nook. The seamless integration of this space behind a custom door adds both character and practicality.

Other significant upgrades included transforming a spare bedroom into a bright and efficient laundry/mudroom, relocating the primary bedroom entrance to improve circulation and wall space, and removing awkward arches to create clean sightlines and better proportions throughout. Each decision improved not only the look of the home but also the way it functions day to day.

Natural wood tones, fluted detailing, and tactile finishes give the home a sense of craftsmanship and authenticity, while sunlight streaming through the main floor highlights the warmth and texture of the materials. The result is a home that feels calm, connected, and beautifully balanced—a perfect blend of design intelligence and personal touch.
